We strip any existing turf or weeds, rotavate the soil, level the ground, and rake in a pre-turf fertiliser before laying. The turf is laid in a staggered brick pattern with tight joints and rolled to ensure good soil contact. This preparation is what makes the difference between a lawn that establishes quickly and one that struggles.
We use a hard-wearing ryegrass blend turf that suits London's climate and handles family use. For ornamental lawns or shaded areas, we source shade-tolerant or fine fescue blends. We'll recommend the right turf type for your garden's conditions.
If your existing lawn is patchy, mossy, or full of weeds, a full renovation can bring it back. We scarify to remove thatch and moss, aerate to relieve compaction, overseed bare patches, and top-dress with a sand and soil mix to level the surface.
For lawns that are beyond repair — heavily compacted, mostly weeds, or severely uneven — we'll recommend stripping and starting fresh. It's often more cost effective than trying to patch a lawn that's fundamentally compromised.
Turfing including full ground preparation typically costs between £25 and £40 per square metre. The main cost is in the preparation — stripping, levelling, and soil improvement — rather than the turf itself. A typical London back garden of 40–60 square metres usually comes in between £1,200 and £2,000.
We include everything in our quotes: old lawn removal, soil preparation, turf supply and laying, initial watering, and waste disposal. No hidden charges for skip hire or ground preparation.
Turfing & Lawn Care Across London
We lay new lawns and renovate existing ones for homeowners across London, from small urban gardens to larger suburban plots.
Turf can be laid year-round in London, but the ideal windows are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). These seasons offer enough moisture and mild temperatures for the roots to establish quickly without heavy watering.
Summer turfing works fine but requires diligent watering — typically twice daily for the first two weeks. We avoid laying turf during hard frost. If your project falls in winter, we'll prepare the ground and lay as soon as conditions allow.
We provide clear aftercare instructions with every turfing job. The first four weeks are critical — regular watering, no heavy foot traffic, and the first mow at the right time make a significant difference to how well your new lawn establishes.
For ongoing maintenance, we recommend mowing weekly during the growing season, feeding three times a year, and scarifying annually in autumn. We're always happy to advise if your lawn develops problems down the line.
