🌱 Raised Bed Construction

We build raised beds in sleepers (both new and reclaimed), brick, natural stone, and Corten steel. The choice of material depends on your garden style, budget, and what you're growing. Sleeper beds suit cottage and contemporary gardens alike, while brick and stone integrate well with period properties.

Every raised bed is built on a level foundation with internal drainage considered. For vegetable growing, we fill beds with a quality topsoil and compost mix. For ornamental planting, we match the soil to the plants being used — free-draining for Mediterranean species, moisture-retentive for woodland planting.

🧱 Retaining Wall Construction

Retaining walls hold back soil on sloping sites, creating usable flat areas and preventing erosion. We build retaining walls in natural stone, brick, concrete block (rendered or faced), and gabion baskets. The construction method depends on the height of soil being retained and the ground conditions.

Walls up to 1 metre high are typically built as gravity walls — relying on their own weight to resist soil pressure. Taller walls require reinforced concrete foundations and may need engineering calculations. We install drainage behind all retaining walls using perforated pipe and gravel backfill to prevent water pressure building up.

💷 How much do raised beds cost?

A pair of sleeper raised beds (1.2m × 2.4m each, two sleepers high) typically costs between £600 and £1,000 including materials, labour, and soil. Brick or stone raised beds cost more — usually £150 to £250 per linear metre depending on the material and height.

Retaining walls vary significantly based on height and material. A simple sleeper retaining wall under 600mm costs from around £80 per linear metre. Brick or stone retaining walls over 1 metre high start from £200 per linear metre, with costs increasing for taller or more complex structures.

Raised Beds & Retaining Walls Across London

We build raised beds and retaining walls for homeowners across London, working with gardens of all sizes and gradients.

🪨 What's the best material for raised beds?

For vegetable growing, new untreated oak or hardwood sleepers are the safest option — no chemicals leaching into the soil. Treated softwood sleepers are fine for ornamental beds and are more affordable. Avoid old railway sleepers for food growing as they contain creosote.

Brick raised beds are more permanent and suit formal garden designs. Corten steel gives a striking contemporary look and develops a stable rust patina that's both weatherproof and attractive. We'll recommend the best material based on your garden style, what you're growing, and your budget.

📐 Terracing & Slope Management

For gardens with significant slopes, we create terraced levels using a combination of retaining walls and raised beds. This transforms unusable sloping ground into a series of flat, functional areas — each level can serve a different purpose, from dining to planting to play.

Proper terracing requires careful planning of levels, drainage, and access between areas. We design step and pathway connections between terraces and ensure surface water is managed at each level to prevent waterlogging or erosion. The result is a garden that works with the slope rather than fighting it.
